Salad with seeds

Sunflower seeds are a storehouse of vitamins, useful and sometimes vital for the body. A quarter of the seed kernels consist of protein. Methionine and other amino acids that make up this protein play an important role in fat metabolism. Unsaturated fatty acids, contained in large quantities in seeds, normalize cholesterol metabolism. The seeds are rich in vitamin E, which is responsible for the functioning of the reproductive organs of the body. A large amount of magnesium, which is part of the seeds, contributes to the normal functioning of the heart. Calcium is contained in seeds even in greater quantities than in dairy products.

For those who want to consume this healthy product, but believe that cracking the seeds is unaesthetic, preparing salads with the addition of seeds is an excellent option. Thanks to their specific, bright taste, the seeds become an excellent addition to many salads, adding special, exotic notes to them.

The simplest salad with seeds is carrot-vitamin salad. To prepare it, you need to grate fresh carrots on a fine grater and add walnuts, raisins and seeds to taste. This salad is dressed with sour cream or olive oil.

There is a famous salad recipe with the addition of seeds, croutons, fried cheese and pine nuts. To prepare it, you need to cut or tear lettuce leaves (lettuce, arugula, spinach), add a handful of fried seeds and white bread croutons, mix all the ingredients. Then you need to cut the cheese into cubes (1.5-2 cm) and deep-fry it, first dipping it in the egg and then in a mixture of flour and paprika. Fried cheese is laid out on a mixture of lettuce, seeds and croutons and all this is poured with dressing (juice of lemon, 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of mustard, a third of a glass of olive oil, a pinch of salt).

The seeds go well with crab meat. To prepare crab salad with seeds, you need to finely chop crab sticks or crab meat, chop Chinese cabbage, add fried seeds and season it all with mayonnaise.

No less interesting are the seeds combined with mushrooms. A hot mushroom salad with seeds will be very nutritious and tasty. To do this, you need to coarsely tear the lettuce leaves, add chopped and fried champignons, stir and add dressing. The dressing is prepared from roasted seeds, chopped parsley or dill, a spoon of lemon juice, a small clove of garlic and a spoon of sunflower or olive oil. This salad is best eaten while it is still warm.

Seeds are an excellent flavor addition to vegetables, especially cabbage. Many people will like a simple but interesting-tasting cabbage salad with seeds. You need to finely chop a small head of cabbage, add the fried seeds and pour the sauce over everything. Sauce: half a glass of vinegar, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, a third of a glass of sunflower oil, 2 tablespoons of sugar, a pinch of salt.

Another great combination is seeds with beets. To prepare beetroot salad with seeds, you need to grate fresh beets on a fine grater, add the juice and zest of one orange and parsley. Before serving, roasted seeds are added to the salad.

And finally, you can make a fruit salad with seeds. To do this, you need to cut one peach and one mango into cubes, cut one banana and one peeled apple into strips. All this needs to be mixed and sprinkled with fried seeds, and then sprinkled with lemon juice.

Remember that seeds are healthy and nutritious, and in a salad they are also tasty and aesthetically pleasing!

Here are some simple grain bread recipes:

Seed selection

First of all, you need to choose the right sunflower seeds for sowing. And they are presented in a huge variety on the Russian market. Every year, breeders develop new hybrids and varieties, making the crop less susceptible to disease and better able to withstand adverse weather conditions while increasing yield. A striking example of the well-coordinated work of agronomists is the hybrid “Yason”, which is not prone to lodging, shedding and thickening, and is resistant to powdery mildew and putrefactive bacteria.

Seed material is divided into 4 large groups according to ripening time:

  • mid-early;
  • mid-season;
  • mid-late;
  • early ripening.

By growing sunflower hybrids with different growing seasons, it is possible to ensure uniform harvesting, reduce losses of marketable grain, and avoid lodging and damage to plants by diseases and pests.

Gardeners planning to sow sunflowers on their own plots should give preference to early and mid-early varieties that have time to ripen in short summer conditions. You should not ignore the climate characteristics of the region, the composition and type of soil.

Key indicators are:

  • germination percentage;
  • purity of the variety - no less than 98%;
  • moisture content – no more than 10%;
  • the percentage of peeled seeds in each package is no more than 3%.

Hybrids with a high concentration of oils have thin husks: they require special growing conditions. To obtain seedlings, it is important to ensure a temperature range from +4 to +10°C. If the region has an unfavorable climate, then it is better to choose three-line varieties. For residents of the southern regions and central Russia, simple hybrids of domestic selection are quite suitable.

The most popular manufacturers in the world are:

  • Limagrain (LG) – France;
  • Syngenta – Switzerland;
  • Pioneer (“DuPont PIONEER”) – USA.

Among the domestic suppliers are:

  • Agrospecial project;
  • AgroSoyuz;
  • SunFlower;
  • AgroElita;
  • AgroVybor;
  • AgroSemya;
  • IstokAgro;
  • Himagro;
  • and many others.

It is recommended to grow sunflowers in the country from seeds with good sowing and varietal characteristics. High-quality seed material can increase the yield by more than 25%. Their only drawback is their high cost, which depends both on the variety and date of selection, and on the manufacturer. If financial possibilities are not limited, then it is better to choose high-quality hybrids with excellent germination rates.

These include:

  • NK Rocky is an early ripening linoleic hybrid with high yield potential (up to 5 t/ha). Ripening period is from 90 to 105 days. Plant height is from 140 to 170 cm (depending on moisture availability). Tolerant to Phomopsis and Phomosis, resistant to broomrape (AG resistance) and drought.
  • NK Brio is a mid-season classic linoleic hybrid with a growing season of 110 to 120 days and a yield of 5 t/ha. Plant height – 170 cm. Resistant to botrytis gray, phomosis, sclerotinia and phomopsis.
  • NK Neoma is a mid-season hybrid with a growing period of 112-116 days, genetically close to the previous one. It is characterized by high productivity and stability. Resistant to Euro-Lightning herbicide.
  • P64LE25 is a standard mid-early hybrid with a germination period of 109-115 days, tolerant to aggressive races of broomrape and adverse weather conditions. Plant height is 180 cm. It has very high resistance to lodging. One of the leaders in terms of productivity.
  • P64LE99 is a mid-season artificially bred variety with a growing season of 120-125 days and increased yield (5.2 t/ha). Plant height is 180 cm. It has high tolerance to broomrape, sclerotinia, Phomopsis and powdery mildew, as well as excellent autofertility.
  • Leila is a three-line mid-early French hybrid with a growing season of 106 days and a yield of 5.3 t/ha. Its height is 180 cm. Resistant to major diseases and drought.

Growing technology

To get an excellent harvest, it is important to choose the right site, as well as follow the basic planting rules, taking into account all the peculiarities of cultivation.

Tillage

Before planting sunflower seeds in open ground, it is necessary to thoroughly cultivate the soil. This crop grows best in clayey areas of high humidity with a pH level from 6.0 to 7.2:

  • chernozem soil;
  • slightly acidic loamy soil;
  • chestnut soil.

Swampy areas with high acidity and a pH level of less than 5.0 and sandstones are absolutely not suitable for sowing. This crop is very demanding on lighting: shaded areas should be avoided. Lack of light can lead to weakened growth, the formation of small heads and reduced yield.

The plant is very demanding in maintaining correct crop rotation. You should not sow the crop in beds where the following previously grew:

  • tomato;
  • beet;
  • alfalfa;
  • beans;
  • barley;
  • peas;
  • soy;
  • rape;
  • Sudan grass.

These crops leave a huge amount of nitrogen in the soil, which negatively affects the growth and development of the plant in question.

Fields that previously contained cabbage, corn, winter crops and potatoes are suitable for sowing.

Before planting a sunflower, you need to carefully dig up the soil the entire length of the shovel. The purpose of the treatment is to eradicate weeds and level the soil surface. The classic method includes plowing, loosening and cultivation. Only in this way will the plant be able to develop a good root system and receive the necessary nutrition and moisture from the soil. In fields with annual weeds, it is recommended to carry out semi-steam plow treatment, and in areas with perennial weeds - layer-by-layer treatment.

Toadflax for your garden: types and description

After the sunflower, you will have to restore the soil long and hard. The land will be unsuitable for growing most garden crops for a long time. To restore depleted soil, you will need to apply phosphorus-potassium fertilizers, dig up the ground and plant peas, beans or forage grasses. If crop rotation is observed, the sunflower returns to its old place after at least 7-8 years.

Seed preparation

It is imperative to calibrate the seed before planting a sunflower. A sieve can be used to select large ones and reject small ones. Seeds are checked for integrity and recalibrated:

  • Dissolve 5 g of salt in 1 liter of water.
  • Place the seed in the liquid for half an hour.
  • Throw away any floating particles.

Immediately before sowing, sunflower seeds need to be treated and disinfected. You can prepare one of the solutions:

  • 1% manganese solution – 1 mg per 1 liter of water. The seeds are placed in the liquid for 15-20 minutes (no more to avoid burns). After pickling, they should be dried;
  • onion-garlic solution - 2-3 handfuls of onion peels and 100 g of chopped garlic per 2 liters of water. Infuse the resulting essence for 2 days. Place the seeds in the strained liquid for 12 hours.

Specialized preparations are also suitable for etching, such as:

  • Agrovital;
  • Commander;
  • Prestige.

Instructions for using chemicals are on the packaging. After careful processing, sunflower seeds can be planted in open ground.

Sowing

Cultivation usually begins around the beginning of May, when the soil warms up to +10-12°C at a depth of 8-10 cm. Of course, everything depends on the climatic characteristics of a particular area. Sunflower seeds are planted in pre-treated, leveled soil. Sowing includes the following manipulations:

  1. Use a hoe to make holes in the ground with a depth of 5 to 7 cm in increments of 50-100 cm (according to the variety). The greater the distance between the bushes, the smaller the kernels and the larger the flowers.
  2. Place 2-3 pieces in each hole and cover with soil. Lightly moisten the soil.

Crop care

Agricultural technology for growing sunflowers involves cultivating the land mechanically, sometimes in combination with herbicides. After sowing, the loose soil is rolled using ring rollers. This action should be performed in dry, sunny weather. This will improve germination, increase seed-soil contact and moisture flow. On an industrial scale, row spacing is cultivated with cultivators.

Since sunflowers grow in stages, care at different phases of crop maturation will differ significantly:

  • The first shoots can be noticed within 10 days from the moment of sowing. At this time, you need to carry out regular watering and weeding.
  • After the formation of the first 2-3 leaves, fertilizing with 40 g of azophosphate and 20 g of urea dissolved in 10 liters of water is required. Before fertilizing the plants, the seedlings should be watered abundantly.
  • When the bolls begin to form, it is worth making a potassium-nitrogen fertilizer (a solution of 1 part mullein and 10 parts water + 1 tablespoon potassium sulfate), which will have a beneficial effect on the formation of large oily seeds. Repeat the procedure in the ripening phase.
  • If curvatures and cracks appear on the leaves, then the lack of boron in the soil should be compensated for with appropriate preparations such as Vuksal Boron. When processing, you must strictly follow the instructions and observe the measure.
  • Sunflower grows quite quickly. As the plant grows, it will require more water. It is especially necessary to increase the frequency and volume of watering during the period from seed conception to flowering.
  • Seed filling occurs 40 days after flowering - at this time the sunflower enters the phase of physiological (otherwise yellow) maturity. The ripening of the crop will be indicated by the browning of 70-80% of the total number of baskets at a seed moisture level of 18-20%.

To better preserve the seeds, it is recommended to tie the baskets with cotton cloth. This will protect the crop from birds and rodents and prevent the fruit from falling to the ground.

Disease and pest control

To properly grow sunflowers, you need to know what diseases and pests this crop is susceptible to. Of the fungal diseases, the most dangerous are Phomosis, Phomopsis, white rot, rust and powdery mildew. Affected shoots stop developing and die. The first signs of disease can be seen after the formation of 2-3 leaves, but obvious symptoms appear later.

In order to prevent fungus, it is necessary to spray Mikosan-B, Trichodermin or Fitosporin before flowering.

The roots are often infested by parasites. Broomrapes are capable of producing up to 100,000 seeds during the growing season and remain in the soil for up to 12-15 years. There are no drugs against this disease, so it is so important to choose the most resistant hybrids and follow the key rules of crop rotation.

Broomrape on sunflower

The most common pests include moths, thornbugs, wireworms, longhorned beetles and weevils. To reduce the risk of insects, you need to get rid of weeds in a timely manner, and at the first signs of damage, treat the plants with insecticides (Taran, Actellik, Desiccant).

Bright ribbons, tinsel, computer disks and scarecrows save you from birds. Also a good option is to tie the heads with breathable fabric or gauze; this can be done after pollination.

Harvesting

Harvesting of ripe sunflowers is usually carried out from August 15 to the end of September. Specific dates vary by region. The inflorescences should lean toward the ground. By the time of harvest, the plant will have lost ½ of its yellow leaves.

When the time comes to harvest, provided the weather is dry and sunny, sunflowers are dried on the stem for 1-2 days. You only need to cut off the head if it turns brown and dries out. Since the stem is hard, it is better to use a sharp knife. In humid climates, cutting a flower is done differently: the basket is tied with fabric, cut along with the stem by 10-20 cm, and hung indoors on a string with the head down. The resulting seeds are thoroughly washed and dried, then stored in containers. Later you can fry them or make homemade butter.

The harvest can be stored for up to six months in a clean, cool room in hanging fabric bags.
