What is a hot dog?

The history of the hot dog

The dish was first mentioned in 1487 in the city of Frankfurt. At least this particular case is supported by evidence. Then it was not about a combination of a bun and a sausage, but about a thin sausage. This cooking technology was something special, and once in the United States, long sausages turned into a real cult.

However, the dish was not immediately so popular. Initially, a Frankfurt butcher came up with a special way of preparing sausages. The technology involved the production of long and thin meat products. In appearance they resembled modern sausages. The butcher gave them the name "dachshund". Translation of words from German is “dachshund”.

Some time later, in the 19th century, an emigrant brought sausages to America. There he began selling them, placing them between two pieces of bread. Later, the latter was replaced with soft, fragrant buns.

At that time, napkins did not yet exist. And in addition to gastronomic, bread solved a hygienic problem. It allowed customers to enjoy the taste of sausage without getting dirty with grease or getting burned.

Where did the name "hot dog" come from?

Initially, the sausages were sold as "daxhunds". It was they who were of main importance, and not the combination of buns and sausages. However, over time, the perception of the product has changed, as well as its name. Today, a hot dog is perceived as a complete dish that must consist of certain components.

But how did it happen that Frankfurt Daxhunds turned into American hot dogs? There are several ideas about what circumstances created the “name” of the dish. And we decided to tell you all the theories that exist in this regard:

  1. Dargan, an early 20th century American artist, decided to depict everyone's favorite dish in illustration. He knew the name of the latter. However, not being well versed in German, he did not know how to spell the word correctly. Therefore, Dargan decided to translate the name. He conveyed the general meaning of the words using his native American language.
  2. The second assumption is that the dish received a new name from the lips of inventive students at the end of the 19th century. The guys often bought hot Daxhunds. And over time, they noticed that mobile snack trailers were constantly surrounded by dogs, who were tempted by the aroma of a hot treat. At first, students called only the vans “dogs.” But over time, the adjective extended to the dish. This version of the development of the name of the snack is also supported by Barry Popik (culinary historian). He found a magazine from 1895 in which students referred to sausages as “hot dogs.”

What is the ideal hot dog sausage?

All hot dogs are smoked cooked sausages that consist primarily of pork, beef, chicken and turkey. The meat used in hot dogs is the muscle of the animal, not lard or anything else.

  2. Keep the heat to low. The mass should barely boil. So cook it for 45 minutes, continuing to stir. The finished jam will have the consistency of thick dark brown jam.
