Beneficial properties of beet juice and possible harm

Beets are a very healthy vegetable for human health, and beet juice concentrates most of the vitamins, minerals and other substances of the root vegetable. Therefore, it is actively used for the treatment and prevention of various diseases, as well as for cleansing the body and losing weight. But if the product is used incorrectly, it can, on the contrary, harm the body, and for some diseases, beet juice is generally contraindicated.

Chemical composition and calorie content of beet juice

Beetroot and its juice have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times, and in the Middle Ages gastrointestinal diseases were treated in this way. Beetroot juice is considered almost healthier than the root vegetable itself. This is because the chemical composition of the product is incredibly rich and varied; such a concentration of nutrients cannot be found in every vegetable or fruit juice.

In addition to the “standard” vitamin and mineral composition, the product contains the substance betalain, which is what beets owe their bright, rich color. This coloring pigment is a powerful antioxidant that helps eliminate inflammatory processes and cleanses the body.

The vitamin composition of beet juice is varied: 100 grams of the product contains 3 mg of vitamin C, which is more than 3% of the daily requirement. Riboflavin, vitamin B2, is slightly inferior to ascorbic acid: it contains a little more than 2% of the norm. Vitamin PP - nicotinic acid, is contained here in the amount of 1.5 of the required daily requirement, it is inferior in content to vitamin E - almost 1% of the norm for an adult.

Beet juice is rich in microelements: potassium here is 5.9% of the norm for humans, magnesium 4.3%, sodium 3.5%, phosphorus 2.2%. There is even calcium - after drinking 100 grams of the drink, we will get almost 2% of the daily requirement.

Among the macroelements, iron is the leader - 3.3% of the daily value for a person in 100 grams of product.

BJU per 100 grams:

  • Proteins 1g
  • Fats 0g
  • Carbohydrates 14 g

It also contains water - 83 grams out of 100 possible, organic acids - malic, oxalic in the amount of 0.2 g and 1 gram of dietary fiber. The product is rich in pectins, amino acids, and flavonoids.

Calorie content of beet juice – 5.8 units per 100 grams

Beetroot juice. Beneficial features

Freshly squeezed vegetable juices have a number of advantages over consuming the vegetables themselves. The fact is that after taking them, they are instantly absorbed by the body, normalizing its work, are a good help in strengthening the immune system, and increase vitality and mood. Beetroot juice, which is rich in vitamins, mineral salts, organic acids, pectin compounds and aromatic substances, is not inferior in this regard.

The composition of beet juice is as follows:

  • vitamins: C, PP, groups B, A, E, K and a rare vitamin discovered in the 50s of the last century - U;
  • minerals: sodium (more than 50%), calcium, iron, magnesium, iodine, manganese, cobalt, chlorine, phosphorus, copper, chromium, boron and others;
  • acids: malic, folic, tartaric, lactic, citric, oxalic.

This unique natural composition explains the benefits of beet juice in the treatment of many human diseases. Its main properties, of course, are blood-forming and blood-purifying. Beetroot juice quickly increases the level of hemoglobin in the blood due to the large amount of iron in it, first of all, as well as cobalt and other trace elements involved in hematopoiesis, improves blood composition and lowers blood pressure. Therefore, when drinking beet juice, the blood is quickly saturated with minerals and natural sugars and is renewed.

Beetroot juice has a very beneficial ratio of sodium and calcium for the body - 50:5. This maintains the solubility of inorganic calcium that accumulates in the body due to the consumption of cooked food. This is especially important when there is slagging and “hardening” of blood vessels, thickening of the blood, which causes high blood pressure and disrupts cardiac activity. This is why beet juice is a known remedy for high blood pressure and other heart problems.

The high content of potassium and chlorine in beet juice ensures the proper functioning of the body's functional systems. Chlorine cleanses the liver, gallbladder and kidneys, stimulates the lymphatic system, helps increase resistance to viral infections and restore strength.

Beetroot juice resists memory loss in people suffering from cerebral atherosclerosis. This is explained by the fact that this root vegetable contains a lot of iodine. This microelement is able to correct cholesterol-fat metabolism, disturbed in sclerosis. Beetroot juice has a high magnesium content, so it has a vasodilating effect and is able to lower blood pressure, and also normalizes cerebral circulation. In addition, the presence of iodine in beets helps normalize the functioning of the thyroid gland.

The benefits of beet juice for various disorders in the body:

  • with iron deficiency anemia;
  • to improve blood composition;
  • from high blood pressure;
  • for disturbances in the functioning of the heart;
  • with atherosclerosis of blood vessels and weakening of memory;
  • as an antiviral agent;
  • antitumor effect;
  • as a laxative for constipation;
  • for menstrual disorders;
  • from stress and nervous overload and insomnia;
  • to cleanse the liver, kidneys, gall bladder;
  • to restore strength and boost immunity.

How to drink beet juice correctly

The first thing to remember before use: do not drink freshly squeezed beet juice, it contains a lot of hot esters and the concentration of substances is too high. After preparing the drink, put it in the refrigerator for at least a couple of hours, but do not cover it. During this time, the juice will settle, a sediment will form at the bottom, and the burning esters will evaporate. Then you need to remove the foam and pour the contents of the glass into another container. Make sure that the sediment does not migrate to another jar. But even in this case, the drink should not be drunk in its pure form; it must be diluted with other juices or water. Paired with beet juice, you can use cranberry, orange, cucumber, carrot, and celery juice. Before dilution, we advise you to familiarize yourself with the indications and contraindications of the selected “second” juice. Moreover, there should be the least amount of beet juice in a glass, for example, 1 part beet juice and 3 parts of other juices. If you do not notice allergic reactions or other side effects after consumption, you can slightly increase the amount of beetroot juice in the “cocktail”.

In its pure form, beet juice can be drunk for the treatment and prevention of diseases only in one case: if the doses of the elixir are very small. You need to start with a couple of teaspoons, gradually increasing the portion to 50 grams. Drink half an hour before meals.

The dosage regimen and serving size depend on the disease and additional conditions (pregnancy, childhood, etc.).
