The first waffles appeared with the invention of the waffle iron. On August 24, 1869, New Yorker Cornelius Swarthout presented an intricate frying pan to public scrutiny. It consisted of two parts that could be connected to each other. The dough poured inside was fried over fire or coals.

There are references to the fact that waffles were also prepared by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Only rich people could afford such a delicacy. In America, waffles appeared even before the invention of the waffle iron, thanks to immigrants from Holland in the 17th century.

Ingredients:
- Ready-made waffle cakes - 1 package
- Butter - 200 gr
- Sugar - 175 gr
- Yolks - 6 pcs
- Lemon zest - from 2 pcs.
- Lemon juice – from 2 pcs.
How to make a waffle cake from ready-made cake layers
Beat butter at room temperature with sugar.
Add yolks. Beat.
Add lemon zest and juice.
Place in a water bath. Stirring constantly, brew the cream until thickened, 10-15 minutes.
Remove from heat, cool to room temperature.
As the cream cools, it thickens.
Grease the cakes with lemon cream.

This dessert can be prepared in literally minutes from products that are sold in any supermarket. The recipe for a cake made from wafer cakes with condensed milk is very simple:
- Combine one can of condensed milk and 70 grams of melted butter in a bowl. Using a mixer or blender, mix the ingredients. If you don't have these kitchen appliances, you can whip the cream by hand, but this process will take much longer.
- Open the set of ready-made cake wafers and carefully brush all the cake layers with the sweet mixture, except the last one. Try to calculate the amount of cream so that there is enough for all the waffles.
- Break 100 grams of dark chocolate into small pieces and melt in a water bath. If you want the finished mass to be more liquid, add a small piece of butter to it.
- Grease the surface and sides of the cake with chocolate cream, and then decorate it with chopped fruits or berries.
When the waffle cake is ready, place it in the refrigerator for one hour. When the dessert is infused, serve it with hot tea or cold lemonade.
Snack cake made from wafer cakes with cod liver
Another version of a simple snack cake can be made with canned cod liver.
The ingredients for this snack will be:
- 3 ready-made waffle layers;
- 1 can of cod liver preserved in oil;
- 3 hard-boiled chicken eggs;
- 200 g hard cheese;
- 100 g onions;
- 150 – 200 g mayonnaise.
Cooking sequence:
- We prepare products for the layer. Eggs and cheese should be grated on a fine grater, the onion should be peeled and finely chopped, and the liver should simply be mashed with a fork right in the jar.
- Grease the first cake with mashed cod liver and cover with a second wafer sheet. We treat it with mayonnaise and sprinkle with grated eggs.
- Next, place another cake layer in the same way, cover it with mayonnaise and sprinkle with cheese shavings.
